Second Life® and Real Life from Shadowen Silvera

Virtual Reality causes severe economic collapse

Recently I read a book, The Unincorporated Man, that presented a scenario in which virtual reality lead to the near destruction of society.

It was called the VR Plague.

The idea is that virtual reality simulations become cheap, engaging, and “better” than reality to such an extent that the majority of the population uses it more than they work, eat, sleep, or otherwise contribute to the working of the world economy. It becomes such a problem that whole families commit suicide by virtual reality by continuously using it until they starve to death.

This upset me for one simple reason. I do not think that people are this stupid. I have more faith in humanity than the author does.

What do you think? Could it be possible to have a VR Plague?
